How the online eye color scanner works

The scanner reads the actual pixels of your iris and turns them into a color reading. Nothing is guessed from a quiz or a personality question, and nothing is sent anywhere.

  1. Your photo loads into a canvas in your browser. It stays in your device's memory and is discarded when you close the page.
  2. You mark the iris. The circle tells the tool where to look; the dashed inner circle marks the pupil, which is excluded from the reading.
  3. Pixels are filtered. The darkest pixels (pupil, eyelashes) and the brightest ones (reflections, the white of the eye) are dropped so only iris color remains.
  4. The remaining color is measured. The tool calculates the average hue, saturation, and brightness, plus the distribution of warm, green, and cool tones.
  5. Inner and outer iris are compared. This is how hazel is caught: hazel eyes carry a warm brown or gold ring near the pupil with green or blue further out. A single average would flatten that into "brownish green" and miss it.
  6. The closest shade is named, along with the pigment mix behind it, a rarity estimate, and the dominant hex colors of your iris.

What the three pigment figures mean

Human irises are built from three ingredients, and almost every eye color is a different ratio of the same three. The bars in your result estimate that ratio from the color your camera recorded.

This is why there is no blue or green pigment in any human eye, and why light eyes change appearance so much with the light around them. The eye color chart shows how the six families map onto these ingredients.

How accurate is an online eye color check?

As accurate as the photo. A sharp close-up in indirect daylight gives a reliable shade name; warm indoor light, flash, and filters all shift the reading. That is why the tool also reports a match confidence figure.

Which eye colors can it detect?

Brown, blue, hazel, amber, green, and gray, plus in-between shades like hazel green, steel blue, ice blue, sage green, and honey amber.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on any modern mobile or desktop browser. On a phone you can take a photo or pick one from your library, then drag and pinch to place the circle.

Why does my result change between photos?

Because light-colored eyes get much of their color from light scattering rather than pigment, so the light around you genuinely changes what the camera records. Blue, green, gray, and hazel shift the most.

Is this the same as an AI eye color detector?
